The Community Service Unit of the Fauquier County Sheriff’s Office is educating our community to protect their personal safety by protecting themselves from crimes. Our Community Services programs include Bicycle Safety, Child Identification, Child Safety Seats, McGruff House, Neighborhood Watch, Special Olympics, and Triad.

Bicycle Safety
The Sheriff’s Office sponsors bicycle safety events throughout our community. Bicycle events educate youth on the importance of bicycle safety, rules of the road, and wearing bicycle helmets. Events are scheduled April through August every year.

Child Identification Program
The Fauquier County Sheriff’s Office Child Identification Program is intended to give parents and guardians a tool for use in the identification of their child, should he or she disappear or become the victim of an accident or natural disaster, and law enforcement is called in to investigate. The Sheriff’s Office works in conjunction with the Fauquier Hospital in hosting “Operation Kid Safe” which is a yearly event where approximately 600 Children are fingerprinted and offered education on child safety. Child Safety Seat Program
Our children are constantly at risk to sustain serious injuries, and possibly death, in motor vehicle crashes. Many of these deaths and injuries can be avoided with the correct use of child safety seat belts and seats. Unfortunately many adults are not aware they are using the safety restraints incorrectly, thereby placing their child at risk. Safety experts believe that approximately 80-90 percent of child safety seats are installed and used incorrectly. For this reason, The Fauquier County Sheriff’s Office has had a deputy certified through the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration to inspect and install child safety seats at the request of parents or guardians. Neighborhood Watch
Neighborhood Watch enlists the active participation of residents, in cooperation with law enforcement to reduce crime in communities throughout the County. The Neighborhood Watch program was implemented to educate communities regarding their responsibilities and roles in the prevention of crime, and to encourage them to take proactive measures to prevent crime in their neighborhoods. The program encourages residents to assist the Sheriff’s Office in organizing the community towards the goal of building a safer, crime-free neighborhood. Neighborhood Watch groups discuss community problems with the objective of developing solutions in their neighborhood. The Fauquier County Sheriff’s Office will supply crime information to neighborhood watch organizations and instruct groups in various crime prevention techniques. Special Olympics
Special Olympics is an international program of year round sports training and athletic competition for more that one million children and adults with intellectual disabilities. The Fauquier County Sheriff’s Office Crime Prevention Unit participates in the national track and field events and serves on the local Special Olympics Committee. Triad
Triad is a partnership between the Fauquier County Sheriff's Office, Warrenton Town Police, AARP, and the retired leadership in the community. The primary goals are to reduce the criminal victimization of older citizens of the community and to enhance the delivery of law enforcement services to them. Triad assesses the needs of the senior population and promotes educational materials and information to seniors in order to educate, and thereby protect against such crimes as telemarketing fraud, “scams”, home security, and elder abuse. S.A.L.T .Council (Seniors and Lawmen Together) govern the Triad. The S.A.L.T. Council consists of local law enforcement officers, government leaders, business leaders and seniors from within the community. The council is responsible for making sure that the needs of local seniors are met. Activities include Senior Awareness Day presentations at local shopping malls, telemarketing fraud/”scam” presentations at local senior retirement communities and numerous other activities. S.A.L.T. Council members are recruited by the Sheriff's Office and are volunteers who agree to work together to achieve the goal of helping and educating the local senior population.
