New Trails near Warrenton: The Central Region
is excited to announce the addition of over 120 acres to our park
and trail system.
White’s Mill Trail is a new 70 acre stream valley
park near Warrenton open for biking, hiking and wildlife observation.
The trail winds along the constructed wet lands bordering Cedar Run.
In a September 2008 Bio-Blitz, 35 different species of birds were
counted, and 55 types of shrubs/trees 10 types of insects and 55
different types of flowers, grasses and ground covers were observed.
Directions to White’s Mill Trail
From South/West:
In Warrenton, take US-15 N/US-29 N/Lee Hwy toward Leesburg/Washington.
Turn right onto Comfort Inn Drive. Comfort Inn Drive becomes Mill House Lane. On street parking/trail head is on your right halfway to the Fauquier Swim Club.
From East/North(Gainesville/Leesburg): take US 29 South. Turn left onto Comfort Inn Drive. Comfort Inn Drive becomes Mill House Lane. On street parking/trail head is on your right halfway to the Fauquier Swim Club.
Woods at Warrenton – 55 acres of property along
Cedar Run are being deeded to the County as a proffer. The property
contains constructed wetlands and will be used for a portion of the
proposed loop trail around Warrenton. This portion will connect White’s
Mill to Warrenton Chase. In the future it will have a parking area
and serve as the trail head for both parks. Nature trails are also
planned for the future to offer environmental education opportunities
for this unique stream valley park. A TEA grant is being used to
initiate planning for this portion of the trail.
The Lord Fairfax Connector Trail will eventually
connect the Warrenton Branch Greenway and the Community College.
Plans have been approved and construction is underway for a portion
of the trail. Starting at the college lower parking area, approximately
a half-mile of trail will be excavated and paved. Efforts and plans
are in the works to acquire and develop portions of the Warrenton
Branch that will add to this very popular trail.
These three trails will be part of the Fauquier County Connection
Plan that was approved by the Fauquier County Board of Supervisors
on November 15, 2007. If you are interested in the trail system being
established in Fauquier County and would like to donate your time,
property or money toward the trail projects, please contact the Fauquier
County Parks and Recreation Department 320 Hospital Hill, Suite 6
Warrenton, Va. 20186. Phone 540-347-6848.

Can be arranged by calling 347-6896.
Warrenton Caboose Volunteers
We encourage you to get involved with all of the railroad activities
on the Warrenton Branch Greenway. You can be assured that there is
always something to do. Contact Fauquier County Parks & Recreation

Warrenton Caboose Historical Restoration
Although the “little red caboose” is now a thing of the past, we
can still enjoy its entire splendor on the Warrenton Branch Greenway.
Resting proud at the 4th Street trailhead, the vintage 1969 Norfolk
& Western steel cupola caboose has been fully restored to its original
operating condition and serves as a showcase of Warrenton’s railroad
heritage and railroad history in general. Over 3,000 volunteer hours
have been invested in the caboose restoration project.
A 1930s-vintage track signal has been restored and electrified to
operate as it did many years ago to control railroad traffic. The
signal is operated by volunteers for all to enjoy when the caboose
is open to the public.
You are invited to stop by the caboose and enjoy a tour. You are
also encouraged to get involved with all of the railroad activities
on the Warrenton Branch Greenway. You can be assured that there is
always something to do, whether it is giving a history tour, painting
a railroad structure, maintaining some landscaping, or simply helping
out at an event at the caboose. The success of the caboose and the
continuing support of other railroad related activities is due to
the generous volunteering of time and resources on the part of citizens
of the community. Contact Fauquier County Parks & Recreation at 540-
347-6896 to lend a hand.
Thanks to The Friends of the Warrenton Caboose for their dedication
and interest in preserving the railroad history of Warrenton.
